许多年后， 我把在麻省理工博士落第视为我一生的最大幸运!

1953年9月硕士毕业后， 我于次年2月参加博士资格考试， 结果竟落第了!但我并不认为这一次失败是一个很大的挫折， 还是继续实行我的博土计划。 1954年选读博士学位必要的课程， 而且花了很多时间与好几位教授讨论可能的傅土论文题目。 后来选择了“ 自动控制” 这一领域， 因为这领域用到数学较多， 比较接近我的兴趣。 我也继续当研究助理。 更重要的是， 我用功温习过去所学， 希望下次资格考试能成功。

1955年2月， 我充满了信心， 第二次参加博士资格考试。 几天后成绩揭晓， 我又是榜上无名! 这是我有生以来最大打击。 站在榜前， 呆呆地望着没有我名字的榜， 自尊心、 自信心在倏忽中消灭。 十几年的读书生涯戛然中断， 下一步做什么事都还没有想到， 我何以对父母?何以对我新婚不久的妻子?

假使我通过考试， 我一定会继续读博士， 几年以后， 也一定会读成。 那以后做什么呢?最可能就是去工业界做研究工作， 或者留学校做教授， 总之这是一条学术、 研究的路。 以我对工程的平平兴趣， 我相信这条路不会走得太远。 我也绝对不会进入半导体界， 因为那时半导体界根本不雇用机械博士。 我相信我也不会进人企业管理， 因为这也不是博士常走的路。 我的人生会完全两样， 恐怕也不会在这里写《张忠谋自传》 了。

Most such people, when they pay heed to engineering at all, tend to think of it as applied science! Modern engineers are seen as taking over their knowledge from scientists and, by some occasionally dramatic but probably intellectually uninteresting process, using this knowledge to fashion material artifacts. From this point of view, studying the epistemology of science should automatically subsume the knowledge content of engineering. Engineers know from experience that this view is untrue, and in recent decades historians of technology have produced narrative and analytical evidence in the same direction.
